Poems of Praise

These poems will help you praise the Lord with heartfelt joy and thanks. Whether your heart is overflowing with gratitude and you want a poem of praise to express your thoughts and feelings in words or you are wondering how to praise the Lord, you can find biblical inspiration and help.

The Bible teaches us that praising the Lord is beautiful and fitting for God’s people. In good times it increases our joy and helps us get closer to God, and in hard times it helps us lift our minds to God and away from the pressures of life so that we can find joy and strength to carry on.

Still Worthy

Still Worthy

Still Worthy

Before the world existed
And time or space were made,
God’s Son was with the Father
In majesty arrayed.

But then He came among us,
A man like you and me.
He faced the same temptations
Yet stood in purity.

Messiah still was worthy
Of sitting on God’s throne
Where not a hint of evil
Can enter or be shown.

Then Jesus took our sin-load
With all our guilt and shame
And gave Himself as payment
As if He was to blame.

His sacrifice sufficient
To cancel all that sin,
The risen Christ ascended
And freely entered in.

He sat beside the Father
On God’s eternal throne
Unscathed and robed in glory
To claim it as His own.

Still worthy of His title,
Still worthy of His place,
Oh, what a glorious Savior
Now fills the throne of grace!

It’s one thing for the Son to have been co-equal and able to sit on the Father’s throne before the incarnation. But He twice took steps that would have disqualified anyone else – facing life’s temptations and then bearing our sin – and yet He triumphed in purity and glory, still worthy to claim His title and throne. As we believe:

Jesus…

  • Lived on earth as one of us
  • Faced the same temptations and troubles we face
  • Never sinned in thought, word, or action
  • Remained pure and holy without a hint of sin
  • Was still worthy to sit on God’s holy throne after 33 years on earth

We know from experience what divine strength and purpose that takes!

And then He…

  • Took all of our sins as if they were His own and stood guilty in our place
  • Offered Himself as a sacrifice and died in our place
  • Was a substitute so pure, so infinite, so acceptable that He did what we could never do
  • Paid for and canceled the record of all those sins in full
  • Rose to eternal life unscathed by evil
  • Ascended worthy to sit on God’s righteous throne, retain His titles, and reclaim His rightful position of honor and majesty

That is magnificent and astonishing beyond our comprehension!

Truly the Lord Jesus is eternally worthy of all worship and praise.

Hallelujah!

The Lord is far above us,
And yet He’s very near;
His glory fills the heavens
Yet makes our pathway clear.

The heavens can’t contain Him,
And yet He dwells within;
He needs no approbation
Yet loves the praise we bring.

His wisdom fills the ages,
Yet guides us as we pray;
He’s changelessly eternal
Yet cares for us each day.

He’s wholly self-sufficient
Yet reaches down in love;
He’s perfect, just, and holy
Yet welcomes us above.

Psalm 100

Psalm 100

Psalm 100

We raise a joyful noise to You
Our Maker, Shepherd, Guide
For endless mercies ever new
And truth that will abide.

We come to serve with cheerful song
And hearts that overflow,
Rejoicing that we each belong
To One who loves us so.

Within Your courts we lift our voice
And bless Your holy Name;
In thankful praise our hearts rejoice –
Your goodness we proclaim.

You reign alone the Lord of all,
Sustainer of our days;
Before Your throne we humbly fall
And bring our highest praise.

God’s Creation Sings

God’s Creation Sings

God’s Creation Sings

The beauty of the nighttime sky
That sings its Maker’s praise
The thunder of the crashing waves
That roar His wondrous ways

The glory of the morning sun
That shows His faithfulness
The shadow of the mountains high
That tell His changelessness

The wonder of the growing crops
That show His tender care
The height of clouds that help us see
The Lord is everywhere

The singing of the little birds
That raise a joyful hymn
The croaking of the summer frogs
That point our thoughts to Him

The presence of the pleasant breeze
That helps us feel He’s near
The whole of God’s creation sings
And makes His glory clear

Come See, The God of Heaven

Come See, The God of Heaven

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is walking on this earth;
The angels He created
Announce His humble birth.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is healing blind and lame
And making friends of outcasts
Who call upon His Name.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is dying on the tree –
The innocent found guilty
To pardon you and me.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is rising from the grave
Exalted and triumphant
To prove His pow’r to save.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Ascending to His throne
To intercede forever
For those He calls His own.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is coming back to reign
With all His saints who follow
Exultant in His train.

Come, see! The God of heaven
Is making all things new.
Our King and our Redeemer
We bring our praise to You!

God Is Very Near

God Is Very Near

God Is Very Near

God’s love and kind provision
Amaze me day to day,
That One so great and mighty
Would care in such a way.

His goodness never ending
Is near to bless and guide,
His mercy is abundant
To pardon and provide.

His grace is so much greater
Than sin could ever be,
His presence reaches further
Than mortal eye can see.

His glory fills the heavens,
The earth reveals His might,
He sees as well at midnight
As when the sun is bright.

He’s both our Judge and Refuge –
Let all rejoice and fear
For God Himself our Maker
Is always very near.

There’s No One Else Like Jesus

There’s No One Else Like Jesus

There’s No One Else Like Jesus

There’s no one else like Jesus
So loving and so true,
So holy and so righteous
Yet full of mercy, too.

There’s no one else like Jesus
So constant and so near,
He’s always right beside me
To guide, sustain, and hear.

There’s no one else like Jesus
So giving and so kind,
So willing to forgive me
And leave my past behind.

There’s no one else like Jesus
So changeless and so strong,
His goodness and His glory
Will be my endless song.

God Didn’t Have to Care

God Didn’t Have to Care

God Didn’t Have to Care

Enthroned in perfect splendor
God didn’t have to care
About rebellious creatures
Who sinned and faced despair.

Yet love defined His nature –
He wouldn’t turn away
From those that He’d created
Though we had gone astray.

He felt our pain and sorrow
And grieved that we were lost;
He set His mind to save us
Despite the awful cost.

He left the light and glory,
The worship and the praise,
To share a world we’d broken
With all our sinful ways.

Then, when He’d faced temptation,
He took sin’s heavy load
And died the death we’d chosen
To pay the debt we owed.

Though crucified He triumphed –
He rose to crush our foe
And offer free salvation
To all who dwell below.

Now risen and exalted,
The God-man gladly bears
The marks of our redemption
Which make us sons and heirs.

Enthroned in perfect splendor
He reaches down in love
To save the lost and give us
His endless life above.

The Name of Jesus

The Name of Jesus

The Name of Jesus

I love the Name of Jesus –
There’s nothing else so dear;
It brings such joy and gladness
His precious Name to hear.

The saving Name of Jesus
Is wonderful to me –
It speaks of peace and pardon
And says that I am free.

The lovely Name of Jesus
Is beautiful and sweet –
My source of life and comfort,
It makes my joy complete.

The worthy Name of Jesus
Will someday be confessed
By every tongue and nation –
Forever praised and blessed.

The holy Name of Jesus
Is heaven’s glorious song,
The theme through endless ages
Of all the blood washed throng.

I love the Name of Jesus –
Oh, may my life proclaim
The glory, strength, and honor
That’s due His precious Name.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 51-58

Oh death, where is the bitter sting
You boasted all those years?
And grave, where is the victory
You threatened to our fears?

The sting of death was bound in sin,
And sin drew strength from law;
By seeming inescapable
They held the world in awe.

But thanks to God through Jesus Christ
The victory is ours –
He died and rose to crush the grave
With sin and all its powers.

If we receive His work of grace
Then, at the trumpet blast,
We too, made incorruptible,
Shall rise to life at last.

So let us live in hope, unmoved,
And busy for the Lord,
For soon we’ll rise victorious
To find a great reward.
