Failure and Dreams

In my work as a mentor, I often hear people express feelings something like this: “If I think about and focus on my dreams, and they don’t materialize, I will be disappointed, maybe even devastated!  So I don’t dream, and then I’m not set up to fail.”  Read more →

Nature’s Gift

This morning I walked along the shoreline of a pristine beach in Oregon. Wind tugged at my hair and jacket as I enjoyed the ever present symphony of the undulating waves. Seeing the vast ocean reaching out to touch the expanse of grey-blue sky turned my thoughts heavenward. Raw beauty, undisturbed by man, surrounded me.  Read more →

Treasure the Journey!

Today I was reminded of a sweet truth from three of my favorite people: my little granddaughters! I figured it would only take a few minutes to walk the four blocks to a nearby park and spend some time in the delightful spring sunshine pushing swings and catching girls sliding down brightly colored slides.

I was intent on the destination, but they were out to experience the journey!

Are We Creators?

I believe we are creators, made in the image of our Lord, the Master Creator. What and how do we create? We create our world by thinking thoughts, by taking action, and by choosing how we react to life events. It was lovely until we tried to sing a piece a cappella which we didn’t know! Strange harmonies ensued —followed by heartfelt laughter! It was contagious; soon all were laughing, some laughing to the point of tears! Read more →

The Pain of Tragedy

Simply understanding the concept that tragedy is part of the human experience can’t prepare us for the emotional tsunami of pain, upheaval, and grief brought on by unforeseen personal tragedy as it crashes over us in massive waves, which could possibly suffocate and pull us under forever. When personal tragedy struck me at the age of 25, my heart broke; my world turned upside down. Read more →

The Wonder of Water

Mindfulness….recently, I have been striving to be more mindful, more aware, especially of things that I don’t notice. So as I stepped into the shower, as I usually do each day, this morning I paid attention to the water. As I focused on the hot water streaming over my body, and the pleasure and satisfaction that washed over me, gratitude filled me.  Read more →

Dad’s Letter

“There is something in each day that can bring gratitude and joy if only we will see and appreciate it. Perhaps we should be looking less with our eyes and more with our hearts.”  -Dieter Uchtdorf

There was a time long ago in my life when this quote would have made no sense to my reality. Darkness was closing around me; I felt isolated, forgotten, and alone. My child would smile–I could see it, but not feel it. I had closed my heart to all, because of the pain from one. And then I received the letter. Read more →
