Resistance or a Soft Heart

Why do we sometimes push away the very thing we desperately desire or need? This happened to me just yesterday. I was given a compliment but was not able to receive it fully. Instead of accepting it at face value and seeing it as a genuine gesture of love, I chose to hold it at arm’s length, analyzing it to death. Receiving this kindness graciously would have blessed my life! After thinking and praying about it, I realized that I couldn’t accept the compliment because, in that area, I didn’t feel deserving or worthy of it. In pondering how to remedy my inner lack, I came upon this wisdom by Eckhart Tolle in his book  A New Earth:

“Resistance is an inner contraction, a hardening of the shell…You are closed. Whatever action you take in a state of inner resistance (which we could also call negativity) will create more outer resistance, and the universe will not be on your side; life will not be helpful. If the shutters are closed, the sunlight cannot come in. When you yield internally, when you surrender, a new dimension of consciousness opens up. If action is possible or necessary, your action will be in alignment with the whole and supported by creative intelligence… [creating] a state of inner openness. Circumstances and people then become helpful, cooperative. Coincidences happen. If no action is possible, you rest in the peace and inner stillness that come with surrender. You rest in God.”

The Bible points to this inner openness. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart …. “ (Ezekiel 36:26).  “For God maketh my heart soft…” (Job 23:16). Ah!  This inner openness or soft heart comes from God, for He is the giver of all good gifts! (James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.”)

Dear Father of Lights, illuminate my understanding! Teach me!  Make my heart soft and receptive to all good that comes my way!  Please heal me from my lack. Where I felt undeserving, shed your abundant light upon truth. Change me to become like Thee!

I am learning. His peace accompanies a transformation within. I feel my heart healing, opening, softening. Gratitude and stillness now. Thank you Lord.
