Miracles

Have you experienced any miracles lately? Last week I witnessed a miracle as my 2nd daughter gave birth! Welcoming this little newcomer to our world was a sacred experience. Seeing life in this tiny perfect infant as he was placed in his mother’s arms was truly a miracle. As the midwife showed us the placenta, she explained how the blood of the mother and baby never mixed but were so close through the cord and placenta that oxygen was exchanged from the mother’s blood to the baby’s blood while in the womb! Another miracle, happening silently as the baby formed through all those previous months.

Last night I witnessed miracles as I lay on the grass watching jets blink across the sky and stars pepper the vast darkness with pinpricks of light. This morning, I found another couple of handfuls of raspberries on my bushes. Last week they were too green; today they are delectably ripe! Another miracle! And when I sent a group text out, 20 people got my message at the push of a button! I call that a miracle too.

Sometimes we are so self-absorbed that we don’t truly see what is happening around us. To me, miracles are the fabric of life, if we only have eyes to see and hearts to appreciate their magic. When hearts change and become soft and pliable, that, to me, is also a beautiful miracle! I have watched the love of a girl for her dad blossom where there used to be only thorns. That was indeed a miracle!

I agree with George Bernard Shaw when he wrote, “Miracles, in the sense of phenomena we cannot explain, surround us on every hand: life itself is the miracle of miracles.” Miracles increased dramatically in my own life as I began acknowledging and delighting in them, believing in them and intentionally expecting them to show up for me. Expect miracles and they will grace your life! Look outside yourself, ask for eyes to see and a heart to receive! Miracles are on their way!!
